One of GSO main functions is to issue Gulf Standards /Technical regulations through specialized technical committees (TCs). GSO through the technical program of committee TC No.:5 "Technical committee for standards of food and agriculture products has prepared this Standard. The Draft Standard has been prepared by United Arab Emirates. The draft Standard has been prepared based on relevant AIDMO, International and National foreign Standards and references. This standard has been approved as a Gulf (Standard /Technical Regulation) by GSO Board of Directors in its meeting No. ( ), held on / / H, / / G.
Decaffeinated Coffee 1. SCOPE This gulf standard is concerned with whole and ground decaffeinated coffee beans. 2. COMPLEMENTARY REFERENCES 2.1. GSO 9 :Labeling of Prepackaged Foods. 2.2. DEFINITION In addition to the definitions included in the Gulf standard mentioned in clause 2.7, the following definitions are used in this standard: 3.1 Decaffeinated coffee: Is a roasted coffee with most of its caffeine removed by extraction method. It could be whole roasted bean, or in an instant powder form. The coffee content (on dry matter basis) shall be: (a) not less than 95% by weight in the case of dried coffee extract. (b) 70% to 85 % by weight in the case of coffee extract paste. (c) 15% to 55 % by weight in the case of liquid coffee extract. 1
3.2 Foreign materials: Minerals, animal or plant waste or any other material which is not part of the product. 4. REQUIREMENTS The Final Product Shall Comply with The Following requirements: 4.1. The Coffee used in manufacturing shall comply with the requirements stipulated in the Gulf standards mentioned in item (2.14/2.12/2.15). 4.2. The product should be processed as per the conditions mentioned in the Gulf standard mentioned in item 2.2. 4.3. It is not allowed to add any materials to prevent adulteration, such as filling agents, colorants, fats, oil. 4.4. Product should be free of foreign materials. 4.5. The residue of the solvent used to extract caffeine shall not exceed 5 ppm expressed as chlorine when dichloromethane is used, and 5 ppm when ethyl acetate is used. 4.6. The total ash should not exceed 5% by weight based on the dry matter. 4.7. The anhydrous caffeine content should not exceed 0.3% by weight of the coffeebased on the dry matter. 4.8.Mycotoxins (Aflatoxins) limits should be according to the relevant standard mentioned in item 2.10. Ochratoxin A should not exceed 5 ppb. 4.9. Moisture should not exceed 5% of the weight in roasted whole grains and 8% in the ground grains. 4.10. Radioactive levels should be according to the related standard mentioned in item 2.9. 4.11. Microbiological limits should be according to the relevant standard mentioned in item 2.11 4.12. Pesticide residues should be according to the related standard mentioned in item 2.8. 5. PACKAGING, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE 5.1 Products shall be packed in clean, dry, sound, air-tight containers free from undesirable odor. The containers should be made from suitable packaging material. 5.2 Packages shall be well sealed, air-tight, and under vacuum or inert gas. 5.3 Transportation and handling of packaged coffee shall be in such a manner as to maintain its safety, quality and to protect it from moisture, excessive heat, undesirable odor and mechanical damage. 5.4 Products shall be stored in well ventilated, clean, dry stores and far away from humidity, sun light and undesirable odors. 2
6. SAMPLING Samples should taken according to the Gulf standard mentioned in item 2.16. 7. TESTING 7.1 Determination of caffeine content shall be carried out according to the GSO standard mentioned in 2.4. 7.2 Determination of Dichloromethane and Ethyl Acetate residues shall be carried out according to GSO standard mentioned in 2.5. 7.3 Sensory and visual examination and determination of foreign matter and defects shall be carried out according to the GSO standard mentioned in 2.6. 7.4 Other tests should be performed according to the GSO standard mentioned in 2.13. 8 LABELLING Without prejudice of the requirements mentioned in GSO standards mentioned in item 2.1, the following information shall be included on the labels: 8.1 product Name Decaffeinated Coffee. 8.2 Residuals caffeine content in the product. 8.3 Shelf life of the product according to the GSO standard mentioned in 2.3. 3
